Cycling into villages during the route I have noted that as you enter some of the usual name signs are upside down. Were the local workmen all drunk on vin rouge? Was it some strange French custom? In the end I asked friends who live in Paris to be told that it is, as is often the case with rural disruption here, down to farmers.
Apparently it is a protest orchestrated by the farming union representing younger workers, a protest that started in a small town in the south west of the country but which is now more widely spread. It supposedly symbolises the 'upside down', contradictory policies the farmers feel they are being asked to follow by the French government.
So thank you Shaun for providing me the information, you’re a clever lad. And thank you Suzie for pointing out he looked it up on the internet.
